The tyre season refers to peak logistics periods in parcel shipping that occur annually from 1 March to 31 May and from 9 September to 12 December. During these times, the volume of tyre shipments – particularly summer and winter tyres – rises significantly. GLS responds with additional resources and optimised processes to ensure on-time deliveries even during peak demand. For this extra effort, we apply the seasonal surcharge "Tyre season", which is clearly itemised on your invoice.

Important information about the tyre season

During the transition between summer and winter tyres and vice versa, shipping volumes surge. GLS meets this seasonal challenge with proactive planning and great flexibility. This ensures that your tyres are delivered safely and on time, even when volumes are high. The behind-the-scenes effort increases significantly – forming the basis for the "Tyre season" surcharge.

Reifenversand Saison

Summer tyre season

The summer tyre season starts on 1 March and ends on 31 May. During this period, many vehicles are fitted with summer tyres – resulting in increased demand at workshops and tyre retailers. This leads to a significant rise in shipment volumes within the parcel network. GLS provides additional transport and sorting capacity to avoid bottlenecks. The seasonal surcharge helps to offer these services in a cost-effective and well-planned manner.

Winterreifen Reifenversand

Winter tyre season

The winter tyre season starts on 9 September and runs until 12 December. Demand for winter tyres is particularly high before the onset of winter – legal regulations and weather forecasts further influence shipment volumes. GLS increases staffing levels and plans additional routes to manage short-term volume spikes. The "Tyre Season" surcharge enables us to maintain this service quality reliably.

How the tyre season surcharge is calculated at GLS

The surcharge for tyres during the tyre season is calculated in accordance with our current price list. It applies exclusively to shipments sent between 1 March and 31 May and between 9 September and 12 December. The surcharge is shown separately on your invoice, giving you full cost transparency – even during seasonal peaks.
